Paint Effect

by Victoria Landis on October 11, 2010

One of my catch phrases is ‘painting changes everything’.  It’s on the masthead of my website.  It’s true.  I can take the literal sow’s ear and turn it into a silk purse by using paint effects.  Check out the white plastic outlet covers I painted to match the stone backsplashes.

Faux effects or special effects or paint effects.  Whatever you like to call them, for a relatively small investment of time and/or money, will change the way you feel about your home or office.  Change the way your clients, family, or friends feel in your home or office.  It can change the perception of the level of your success and bring you more clients.  Your environment ‘speaks’ to everyone who enters it, whether you realize it or not.

Even the wall color itself, nothing fancy - just the color, influences what people think of you and how they react to you.  It’s sub-conscious.  People don’t (well, most don’t) walk into a home or place of business and assess the decor on purpose.  But everyone does without realizing it.  Think about it.  You’re in a hurry.  Your mind is on everything that needs to be done.

You step into a office.  There’s bleak grayish white paint on the walls.  It feels drab and depressing.  On a conscious level, you don’t take a seat and start thinking how it’s affecting you.  But you get antsy while waiting.  You feel an irritation, but you don’t know why.  A ten minute delay in your appointment is pissing you off.  By the time you see the person you’ve waited for, you have no patience for them.

Now think back to an occasion when, despite being behind schedule, it didn’t bother you.  Or when someone had to deliver less than desirable news, and it didn’t bother you anywhere near as much as it normally would.  You think it was all about the cereal you ate that morning?  Nope.  The colors and paint effects of where you were influenced your reactions.

Knowing this, do you really want to possibly turn people off when the cost of appealing to them is one of the most economical changes you can make?  Why work so hard to bring people in for appointments and sabotage yourself by presenting an environment that agitates them?

It doesn’t have to be elaborate.  It just has to appeal to people as opposed to repelling them.  If you can’t tell what your office or home is telling people, email me a picture or call.
