Steve Martin on CBS Sunday Morning

by Victoria Landis on December 5, 2010

This morning, Steve Martin was on CBS Sunday Morning, one of my favorite shows.  He was promoting his novel, An Object of Beauty.  The interview continued online at noon.  I watched it all and came away liking him even more than I did before.

He talked about life, acting, art, and writing.  His book centers on a woman with a career in the art world.  I haven’t read it yet, but I love what he said in the interview.  “Great paintings really live on because they’re not quite explicable.”  He said it’s the ones that make you say, “Huh. … Wow!”, versus “Wow! … Huh?”  that distinguish themselves.

The publisher allowed him to have color photo inserts of actual paintings on the pages where they enter the story.  I’m pretty sure if his name wasn’t Steve Martin, the publisher wouldn’t have made that concession.  I’m glad he asked for it, and I’m glad they agreed.  I’ve written stories before that refer to a piece of art, and without a picture, no matter how great the writer, the certain je ne sais quoi quality can’t be described.  Art hits you in the heart as much as in the brain, and those sort of emotions have no words.

I’ll let you know how the book is.

“Art hits you in the heart as much as the brain” — well said! And I love Steve Martin.
