The Art of Writing

by Victoria Landis on November 29, 2010

Maybe the ‘art’ of writing is learning humility.  Developing a thick skin to withstand scathing criticism and learning whose advice (if any) to listen to.  After 8 years of serious writing, I have discovered that there is no substitute for the wisdom and perspective that comes with try, try, try again.

Besides all types of painting, I also love to write.  So far, it’s an avocation at best, but one that brings me such satisfaction.  I’m working on a women’s humorous novel, among other things.  It’s in it’s 3rd draft (much to the groans of my wonderful critique group).  When they’ve finished working it over, I’ll send it to an agent in LA.

I pitched it to him a while back.  He liked the premise, but wanted a shorter manuscript.  So I’m rewriting the whole shebang to take 22,000 words out of it.  As painful as it seemed in the beginning, I really now think it’s a better book than before.  Even if he decides not to take me (and it) on as a client, I owe him gratitude for making me make it better.

I do write a monthly humor column for a local magazine, The Parklander.  For the December issue, I did a piece called  Dirty Sexy New Year (With apologies to Megan McCain).  Back issues are available online.  I don’t have one in November’s, but I do in the others since April 2009.  October’s was about how Trick or Treating started.

If you read them and like them, please post a comment on this blog, if you would be so kind.  If you didn’t like it, I still welcome your comments, but keep them gentle.  Although I’ve developed this tough hide, a spoonful of sugar sure does make the criticism easier to digest.
